Basics of Ecommerce Credit Card Processing —
Merchants often get confused with lot of credit card processing services, the different methods they use, the various technical aspects and the fees pattern they charge. It is very much necessary for them to do a thorough online study before they decide on the best service provider. During the process of selecting the ecommerce credit card processing company, as a first step, the merchant should learn the various key players or persons or concepts involved in the whole process. First one is the Card Associations. The popular ones are the Visa, MasterCard, Discover, American Express, etc., Second one is the Issuing Bank. These are the people who have issued the credit or debit cards to the customer. Some of them like American Express act as both the card association part and as the issuing bank. These two people set the “interchange rates” and the “pass-through fees”.
The third one is the processor or the acquirer. These are the people who routes the transaction to the card association network. Usually they are large companies with powerful computer and server systems. They do all the main work regarding funding the bank account, providing the monthly statement, handling risk management and all the technical supports. The Fourth one is the Merchant Account Provider like eMerchant.com. And the fifth one is payment gateway. Only these gateways provide the customers the shopping carts and route the transaction to the processor.
